Horse & Reader and Horse & Writer

Workshops or year-long programs for kids or adults in reading comprehension, writing, creativity and publishing, while participants learn about horses and become skilled in groundwork and/or riding. Particularly effective for helping kids who are not passing required state tests or are failing in traditional classroom settings. Can be custom-designed as autobiographical narrative workshops for adults who wish to write personal or family histories or explore other topics in their lives.

History on Horseback

Trimester, semester or year-long course in U.S. or California history, focusing on the roles of horses and mules in making us the people we’ve become. Tailored to grade level, meeting state requirements in language arts and social studies, with hefty doses of horsemanship and riding.

Minis With a Mission

Outreach visits to schools and organizations by the J-Bar “minis,” a team of Shetland ponies and miniature horses. Sometimes they take their friend Scotty, the Alpine goat. The minis motivate kids to read and to learn history, language arts, science, animal- related careers and interpersonal skills. Human facilitators teach teachers research-based methods for fostering reading comprehension and writing proficiency. Single visits up to year-long academic and life-skills courses.

NOTE: J-Bar coursed are not "canned." Workshops and courses are custom-designed to meet clients' needs. A recent example: Sustainable Horsekeeping and Environmental Leadership, targeted for foster kids in grades 7-12 and meeting California academic standards in language arts and science.
